Close win for Cronkbourne as Saints and Town keep up the pressure

M Trace

St John's beat Castletown by 21 runs in Sunday's Tinker Cup Semi-Final clash at KWC. Report to follow.........

The top three teams in the Standard Bank League won on Saturday – but it was a close call for second placed Cronkbourne.

Not many people gave them much of a chance when visitors Ramsey bowled them out for 98 at Tromode. Max Stokoe top scored with a stirring 42, but the star was Brian Arnold. The northern seamer found the damp track ideal to his style and took 5 for 14 in seven overs.

In reply Ramsey struggled and soon started to lose wickets. The top three batsmen were quickly dismissed and at 24 for 3 there was a real fight on.

The young Cronkbourne attack then moved up a gear. Luke Lacey with his left arm spinners and the two Stokoe brothers were on target. However Ramsey were gathering runs and the tension began to increase.

At 89 for 9 the last pair needed just ten for victory. But it was not to be. The final wicket went down just four runs short and the Douglas side had recorded a great victory.

Max Stokoe claimed 2 for 12 from nine accurate overs, Luke Lacey had 3 for 25 and Alex Stokoe returned 3 for 15. Jamie Moffatt was the pick of the visiting batsmen with 21.

Leaders Castletown took all four points against Valkyres, but were made to work hard by their opponents. Put into bat on a damp wicket, Valkyres reached 156 for 8 from their 45 overs.

They could have folded when the score was 35 for 3. Then skipper Keith Brew joined Dave Hopkins and the pair put on 70 for the fourth wicket.

Dave became John Short’s first victim and that bowler went on to finish with 4 for 32. Brew was in fine form and arrived at his fifty with a towering six.

Skipper Greg Tomlinson tried no fewer than eight bowlers in an attempt to finish the innings, but Valkyres ended on 156 for 8 from their forty overs.

An opening stand of 53 between Christian Steriopulos and Dave Griffith suggested the Town would cruise home. Valkyres had other ideas and the pair were dismissed by Ali Shah and Andy Corlett.

Brew then bowled the dangerous Mark Williams and 70 for 3 showed the Town there was a lot of hard work to be done. Wicus Wessels came to the rescue with a sprightly 57 not out and Castletown won by five wickets.

Keith Brew’s team are still without a win in this league. On this performance it cannot be long before that first victory arrives.

St Johns scored a massive 258 for 4 against Crosby at Mullen-e-Cloie. Opener Grant Atchison cracked a fine 88, Greg Hawke made 44, Jon Norrington 33 and Ewald Killian 27.

When they came to bat, Crosby found scoring runs difficult. They had reached 136 for 4 when their overs ran out. Andrew Turner and Danny Kniveton both made 35.

St Johns beat Castletown by 21 runs in Sunday’s Tinker Cup Semi-Final. They now meet Ramsey in the Final next Sunday at Mullen-e-Cloie. Full report and preview to follow.
