Man of the Match Pearce fires Saints into Tinker Cup Final

M Trace

St Johns blasted their way into the Tinker Cup Final with a great win against Castletown on Sunday.

The Saints got away to a fine start with a good opening partnership between Grant Atchison (28) and Greg Hawke (46). Skipper Jon Norrington at number three made a useful 21 before the Town bowlers broke through.

John Short followed his four wickets on Saturday with 3 -30 and Mark Williams had a splendid spell. His eight overs contained three maidens as he finished with 3 for 20.

A bright 31 from Scott Pearce boosted the St Johns total before they were dismissed for 171 with one over left.

Scott then rocked the Castletown batting with two quick wickets. Opener Dave Griffiths (40) and Mark Williams (29) then repaired the damage. But the arrival of Ewald Killian into the attack turned the match.

Coming on as bowler number five, Ewald ripped out the middle order with four vital dismissals. Christian Steriopulos (25) stood firm and there was a late flourish from Andy Sewell (13).

The Town ended on 154, just 17 runs behind their target. Jaco Jansen made a welcome return to St John’s ranks with 2 for 35 while “man of the match” Scott Pearce claimed 2 for 21.

The Saints now face Ramsey in the final which is this Sunday at Mullen-e-Cloie. The game is sponsored by Collins Stewart and a classic encounter is expected.

It could be a glorious week-end for the Mullen-e-Cloie men. If they win on Saturday in the Standard Bank League, then they will go top equal with their old foes Castletown.

The Southerners and second placed Cronkbourne do not play and Jon Norrington’s men have a marvellous chance to shine.

They are at home to bottom of the table Valkyres. However this side is gaining form and put up a creditable performance last week against Castletown. It should be a Saint’s win, but definitely not a walk-over.

Ramsey in fourth spot take on Crosby who are one place below. The problem with the Marown side has mainly been their bowling. The batting has stood up, notably when Simon Watson shines.

That Crosby attack will be under pressure as the Ramsey men limber up for Sunday’s final. A good win would be an ideal morale booster. However defeat would shake the northerners. This could be an excellent match

This evening (Friday) the final round of games in the Lloyds TSB Under 11 League will take place at Tromode. Each side will play three times and, at the moment, there are only two undefeated sides.

Castletown A and Cronkbourne A have impressed all season, but they have not met so far. Tonight they go head to head and the winner is likely to take the trophy.

After the fixtures, there will be the prize presentation in the Cronkbourne club-house.
