Great double for St John's as they retain the Tinker Cup

M Trace

Cricket

St Johns retained the Tinker Cup when they beat Ramsey by just 13 runs in a sensational finish at Mullen-e-Cloie on Sunday.

With two overs to go, the Northerners needed 16 runs for victory with five wickets left. They then lost those five wickets in five balls – the last three falling to an Ewald Killian Hat-Trick.

Earlier St Johns had struggled against tight Ramsey bowling. A very accurate Chris McConnell put down eight overs for only five runs.

The side were dismissed for 129 with opener Greg Hawke top scoring on 30. Scott Pearce made 26 and Brian Arnold took 3 for 31.

In reply Ramsey got away to a solid start and at 77 for 1 looked on course for a good win. Rob Webber hit 40, Ollie Webster 24 and Eddie Cleator 16. But relentless pressure from the Saints began to tell and the run rate fell.

In an attempt to reach their target, the batsmen had to take chances and that lead to the dramatic finish. Ewald Killian ended with 4 for 17 and was named Man Of The Match.

St Johns joined Castletown at the top of the Standard Bank League when they beat Valkyres by 106 runs on Saturday. The Saints made 235 for 7 with Chris Hawke hitting 64, Grant Atchison 53 and Scott Pearce 44. Best of the bowlers was Dave Hopkins with 3 for 37.

Valkyres were then dismissed for a spirited 129 with Arnie van der Berg taking 5 for 24. Will Wood scored 22, Matt Wozniak 21, Andy Coulson 20 and Brian Wozniak 18.

Crosby recorded a notable victory by beating Ramsey. Batting first the northerners made 203 for 3. Ollie Webster cracked 67, Rob Webber 64 and Ashley Webster 42.

Simon Watson led the Crosby reply by hitting an excellent 58. Gareth Rowlands scored 27 and Kevin Kniveton 25 as the Marown side got home by 4 wickets.

The Lloyds TSB Under 11 League ended in dramatic style at Tromode on Friday evening. The title was decided on the evening’s last game when Cronkbourne A played Castletown A.

Both sides had won all their six matches and so this was to be the title decider. The southerners batted first and finished on 89 for 2.

Cronkbourne made a good reply and needed just 10 runs for victory with two overs left. But the Town came back strongly with some fine bowling and fielding.

The Douglas side then lost a wicket and so suffered a five run deduction. They finished on 78 to give victory to Castletown. This has been a splendid series of games and a credit to all the youngsters involved.
