Isle of Man Under-19's beat Germany to secure top 3 play-off in ECC Championships

IOMCA

Danny Kniveton has turned in two tremendous performances in the European Under 19 Division Two Championships.

The Isle of Man side, which is sponsored by Standard Bank, have won both games in their opening group round. They now join the leaders from the other two divisions, Jersey and Guernsey, in a contest to decide the top three places.

The Island made a great start on Monday when they beat one of the tournament favourites, Israel, by 3 wickets in a nail-biting finish.

Put into bat, Israel made 151 for 8 from their fifty overs. Best of the bowlers was Danny Kniveton who took 5 wickets for 20 in ten overs. Ollie Swales returned 2 for 24 and Ross Berry had 1 for 28.

There was also accurate bowling from Max Stokoe whose nine overs cost just 28 runs and Luke Lacey who put down ten overs for only 29.

Needing 152 to win, the Manx were given a good start by Max Stokoe and Andrew Turner who had an opening stand of 43. When they were out, the middle-order became pinned down by the Israeli bowlers.

Danny Kniveton started well, but it was Richard McGarry who boosted the run rate. He made a quick fire 18, which included two fours and a six.

Wickets were falling, but Danny kept his nerve and guided the side home with a splendid 38 not out. There were only three wickets left and one over remaining in a very tight finish.

On Tuesday the Island  took on Germany who batted first and were soon in trouble at 29 for 3. Then skipper Kashif Mahmood with 31 and Haris Bhatti put on 53 for the fourth wicket.

The Manx struck back and eventually dismissed Germany for 147 after 45 overs. Max Stoke had a good spell of 3 for 17, Ollie Swales took 2 for 31 and there were wickets for Ross Berry and Luke Lacey.

In reply it didn’t look good for the Island when both openers went cheaply and the score was 11 for two. But Danny with brother Ricky Kniveton had a fine stand of 94 before Danny was out for 58 – scored from 70 balls.

Luke Lacey joined his skipper and the duo took the side to a splendid seven wicket win. At the end Ricky had played a real captain’s innings of 47 not out and Luke was undefeated on 15.

The Island are now assured of at least third place in this nine country championship. But can they go higher? So far the going has been tough – but their matches against Jersey and Guernsey will be even more demanding.

This week-end the Standard Bank League fixtures will be played on Sunday.

After their marvellous Tinker Cup win, St Johns cannot relax and face another tough test. They are joint top of the table with Castletown, but now travel to face Cronkbourne who are only two points behind.

Skipper Jon Norrington returns for the Saints and all his skills will be needed on a Tromode track which is likely to favour the bowlers. The Saint’s attack will relish the conditions and the Cronkbourne batsmen could have big problems.

It will be up to batsmen Pete Richards and Steve Clague to use their class and experience to good effect - otherwise the Douglas team could have major problems.

Castletown are at home against a Ramsey side which must be bitterly disappointed at last week’s results. They first lost to Crosby in the league and then to St Johns in the Tinker Final.

Skipper Rob Webber now needs to lift his side and come out fighting against a Town team which is positively buzzing with energy. Paceman Garreth Roome returns to add fire to their attack, but the northerner’s Chris McConnell could be the one to watch.

Boosted by that win at Ramsey, Crosby will be confident of victory against Valkyres. But a word of warning! The Marown side have been inconsistent of late and any sign of weakness will be exploited by Keith Brew’s spirited southerners.

Their first win of the season cannot be far away – it might even be on Sunday.
