Danny Kniveton takes player of tournament award and Isle of Man get "spirit of Cricket" award at ECC Under-19's in Jersey

IOMCA

Crosby’s Danny Kniveton has been named Player of The Tournament in the European Under 19 Division Two Championships.

The Isle of Man team came third out of the nine countries taking part and won the Fair Play award known as “The Spirit Of Cricket”.

The sides were split into three leagues with the top sides of each division playing off for the final places. The Island side, which was sponsored by Standard Bank, topped their group by beating both Germany and Israel.

On Wednesday they faced Jersey and disaster struck before the game even started. First Steve Slack was ruled out with an arm injury and then during the warm-up Duncan Miller suffered a knee problem and couldn’t play.

So the Island took the field with the only eleven fit players from their thirteen man squad! But it got even worse. Batting first opener Andrew Turner went with the total on eight and skipper Ricky Kniveton was dismissed the next ball.

The team made a spirited rally with Max Stokoe and Danny Kniveton taking the total to 63 before Max was caught for 22. Then both Danny and Luke Lacey hit 25 and the tail wagged to good effect. Kane Dooley made 15, Seb Hopkins 17 and Ollie Swales 10. Against top class opposition the side did well to reach 169.

However the Manx then found Jersey batsman Sam de la Haye in brilliant form. He dominated the home reply with a majestic 89 not out. Aided by Ed Farley who was undefeated on 39, Jersey won the game by 9 wickets. The wicket to fall came with the score on 99 when Luke Lacey bowled Tom Wherry for 29.

On Thursday rain wrecked the Isle of Man’s hopes of beating Guernsey in their final match..

The Channel Island side batted first and were restricted to 216 for 8 from their fifty overs. Their opening pair of John Clark and Bill Thompson put on 72 for the first wicket before Max Stokoe broke the stand.

At 144 for 6 Guernsey looked in peril, but the lower order piled on the runs to make another 72 for the loss of two wickets. Max finished with 3 for 43, Danny Kniveton took 2 for 28 and there were wickets also for Ollie Swales and Luke Lacey. The fielding was top class and there were great catches held by Luke Lacey, Seb Hopkins and Danny Kniveton.

In reply the Island lost an opener with only two runs on the board. But then Ricky Kniveton and Andrew Turner took the total to 74 when Ricky went lbw for an excellent 47. Danny Kniveton joined Andrew and the score had reached 107 for 2 when down came the rain.

When play resumed after a 20 min break, the Island needed 110 to win from 20 overs and eight wickets left. However the weather looked ominous and they were behind the Guernsey run rate.

So quick runs were needed, but the wicket was now lively and Tom Kirk exploited the conditions in a superb spell. He took 5 for 20 and the Island were dismissed for 142. Andrew Turner made 27 and Danny Kniveton 17.

So the Island came away from the championships with third place – a splendid achievement from their first entry into Europe at this level.

Philip Hudson, the ICC European Development Officer, presented Danny Kniveton with the Player of the Tournament award. His batting average was 45 and he also took eight wickets at just under 12 each. A remarkable feat at this level.

The “Spirit Of Cricket” trophy reflects well on the sportsmanship of the entire squad. Full credit must also be given to manager Colin Kniveton and coach Jeff Levin for their tireless efforts.
