Jersey cricketers lift U19 European Division II title

JERSEY won a cracking match against Guernsey at Grainville yesterday to win the ICC European Division 2 Championship.

With Jersey struggling on 77 for 4 chasing 224 for victory, a brilliant fifth-wicket partnership of 140 by Ed Farley and Matt Hanley steered the hosts to within touching distance of success.

Sadly Farley exited following a super 100 before Anthony Kay put the ball to the boundary early in the 47th over to win the match by five wickets.

It was tough on Guernsey as twice they dropped Farley - on 53 and 60 - and had either chance been taken they may well have gone on to win the game and the tournament themselves.

Farley's 50 came up with his eighth boundary off 67 balls and he deservedly completed his century off 122 deliveries in 147 minutes. The partnership ended just a few balls later off the final ball of the 44th over, Farley caught in the covers by James Mullen.

Hanley played an excellent supporting role with an undefeated 53, his half century coming up when cut the ball into the gulley for two off his 57th delivery.

Jersey manager Chris Minty said: 'I'm delighted, it was a great team effort and a fantastic partnership. Ed and Matt were tremendous and they played proper cricket shots throughout.

'Ed hit the bad balls well and their running between the wickets was very good. It's been positive all week and the team have crowned it today.

'Yes I was worried when we lost a few wickets but the story of our week has been partnerships and we produced another brilliant one today.'

Jersey skipper Tom Wherry said: 'I was worried a little with four wickets down but the top four have batted well all week. We have a long batting line up and I still thought we could win.

'Ed and Matt were tremendous; it's a dream come true for everyone and certainly the highlight of our careers to date.'
