3 wins out of 4 for Guernsey teams in first round of NatWest CI Club Championship
David Piesing
The annual Channel Islands Club Championship, which is competed for by the top four clubs in each island's completed weekend league programme, got under way on Saturday with a brand new sponsor, NatWest, who have signed a 3-year deal. The sponsorship is invaluable as it enables the competing clubs to heavily subsidise the cost of the 15-minute flights between the two islands.
In Group A, Jersey champions opened up with a home game against Guernsey's 4th-placed Mavericks and this match produced the shock of the day. Romerils, without lynchpin and former county cricketer Ryan Driver, collapsed from 100 for 2 to 200 all out at Grainville. Opener S Bilson made 78 and James Caunt hit 47 not out. Romerils saw their total knocked off ruthlessly by Mavericks who lost just 4 wickets and had nearly 15 overs to spare. Opener Vince Kenny played the key innings for Mavericks, making a brisk 76 while Justin Meades saw his side home with 42 not out.
In the other Group A game Jersey's 3rd-placed Rathbone Old Victorians hammered Guernsey's 2nd-placed Air Search Rovers by 7 wickets at FB Fields after dismissing the visitors for just 107. Only Ryan Bishop with 45 made a decent score for Rovers as Andy Dewhurst took 5 for 23. Dewhurst continued his fine match with 43 while Jonny Gough hit 41 as OVs romped home in the 28th over.
In Group B, Guernsey champions Total Cobo beat Jersey's 4th-placed St Ouen by 61 runs at KGV. Cobo batted first and made 212 for 6 in their 45 overs with Peter Vidamour making 60, Ben Ferbrache 37 and with Gary Rich (18 not out) and Kris Moherndl (25 not out) adding vital runs in the closing overs. St Ouen collapsed to 79 for 7 before Paul Horton and Anthony Kay put on 70 for the 9th wicket but they were eventually bowled out for 151. Cobo's Peter Le Hegarat took 4 for 21.
Also in Group B, Marlborough Trust Optimists, who finished 3rd in the Guernsey league, defeated Jersey's runners-up Sporting Club Francais at Port Soif. On an excellent track, Optimists made 245 for 5 in their 45 overs with Ami Banerjee continuing his recent fine form making 89 not out to follow an unbeaten 92 on the same ground two weeks ago. Opener Tim de Putron made 54 for the home side. SCF struggled against the steady Optimists attack and only skipper Matt Hague with 77 managed to get past 20. Mike Kinder took 3 for 34 while young 16-year old legspinner Ben McVey took 3 for 32 as the visitors were bowled out for 148.
With the inter-insular to be held in Guernsey next weekend the next round of matches will be on 18th August.
