Castletown crowned Standard Bank League champions on run-rate as weather ruins title decider

M Trace

Cricket

Castletown are the champions of the Standard Bank League. On Saturday their match against St Johns was rained off, leaving both sides with 44 points. The Town had a better net run rate and so took the title.

The Saints made heroic efforts to get the game on. Covers had been down since Friday mid-day to protect the pitch. However the overnight downpour continued through the morning and much of the afternoon.

The players hung on till almost the last minute when a reduced overs match could take place. Then the umpires reluctantly came to the conclusion that the game could not go ahead and Castletown had retained the championship.
