BATSMAN Ed Farley was the toast of Jersey cricket again yesterday as he steered Jersey into the final of the European Under-23 2nd Division Championship in Guernsey.
Farley, who scored a century in the Jersey's U19s' 2nd Division Championship win against Guernsey last month, top-scored with 72 runs in a 94-run win against Gibraltar yesterday securing Jersey top spot in the rain hit Group A.

Farley hit five boundaries and one six in a 124-minute stay at the crease where he faced 102 balls.

Jersey topped their group with three points after collecting two yesterday adding to the one they were awarded from their washed out match with Germany on Tuesday.

But hopes of a Jersey Guernsey final disappeared despite Guernsey winning by 51 runs yesterday - the Sarnians were edged out on run-rate overall after they lost a wicket on the final ball of their 34-overs-a-side match against Italy.

Had Guernsey's ninth batsman not been caught off the final delivery of the match, the Sarnians would have won the group.

The loss of Chris van Vliet's wicket dropped Guernsey's run-rate from 1.41 to 1.28 leaving France progressing on 1.31 after they and Guernsey finished level on three points apiece in Group B.

Jersey captain Peter Gough said: 'It was a very good win, we had to be patient too because Gibraltar had some excellent bowlers - their spinners in particular and they kept us tight.

'But our batsman batted with a lot of responsibility. We had a good base and Ed and Andy Dewhurst batted really well when the spinners were on with Ed really cashing in towards the end.

'Tom Minty, Mark Chipperfield and Danny Bertram all hit the ball hard supporting too. Yes we were well pleased with 227 runs in 50 overs and scoring 140 in the last 20 overs was key to our success overall.

'We had a perfect start with the ball too, Tom Minty and Danny Blasco each bowled ten overs straight off and they bowled superbly.

'Once we got into them we took wickets regularly and in the end it was a comfortable win.'
