NatWest CI Club Championship still wide open
David Piesing
After round 2 of the 2008 NatWest CI Club Championship only Guernsey's Air Search Rovers are unable to qualify for the semi-finals, having lost both of their opening group games.
GROUP A
Jersey champions Romerils secured an easy 8-wicket victory over Guernsey's Air Search Rovers at Port Soif but were nearly thwarted by a heavy mid-afternoon shower. A depleted Rovers were bowled out for just 129 (Tim Duke 40) and Romerils reached a D/L-adjusted target of 117 for the loss of just two wickets with Ryan Driver making an unbeaten half-century and Ian Crocker supporting him with 35 not out.
Meanwhile at KGV, Guernsey's Mavericks and Jersey's Old Victorians who both won their opening group games had to settle for a No-Result after heavy rain made the square unplayable after 11 overs of the second innings. Mavericks had been bowled out for 159 (Simon Huxtable 37, Andy Burkhardt 35, Jaco Pieterse 27, Tom Minty 4 for 39) and OVs had replied with 59 for 0 in 11 overs when the heavens opened before a D/L result could be reached.
GROUP A
Total Cobo, the Guernsey champions, restricted Jersey's Sporting Club Francais to 198 for 8 at Grainville (Tony Carlyon 53) and Cobo had reached 131 for 2 in the 32nd over when heavy rain caused the game to be abandoned. Under D/L Cobo were 14 runs ahead of their target to clinch an important victory. Matt Oliver made an unbeaten 63 for Cobo.
Over at FB Fields Guernsey's Marlborough Trust Optimists came badly unstuck against Jersey's St Ouen to lose by 8 wickets. Optimists posted 198 for 9 but St Ouen's Australian keeper/batsman, Dean Morrison, smashed an unbeaten 98 to see his side home with around 14 overs to spare.
