Standard Bank U16 County Festival
Lauren Gouyette, Jersey Evening Post
SUSSEX proved too strong for the Channel Islands team in yesterday's Standard Bank Under-16 County Cricket Festival, as the UK side won by 98 runs.
Playing at Les Quennevais, Sussex won the toss and chose to bat first with openers Luke Wells, 69 from 74 balls, and James Chapman, 52 from 86 balls, top scoring.
A good catch from Matt Hanley disposed of Wells while later in the match Paul Connolly halted a threatening Devon Endersby's progress, with a catch at point, restricting the Sussex player to 40.
Jersey's bowlers in the CI U17 side proved their worth as Tom Gibbs, 2 for 23, and Mark Chipperfield, 2 for 50, both limited the opposition - Guernsey's Adam Robin, 2 for 44, and Jonny Clarke, 1 for 30, also proving useful.
The strong Sussex side made good use of their 50 over innings to post a healthy 259 runs (for 8 wickets) and give the CI team their target.
However, partnerships struggled to form for the Islanders as openers John Borg, 3, and Sam de la Haye, 6, were dismissed early before Chris Whitworth, in at number four, boosted the scoreline with 58 runs. He steadied the team with a superb 132-minute performance and linked up well with Matt Hanley to add to the total.
Following Whitworth's dismissal in the 41st over (bowled by Wells), Gibbs posted 25 runs but the CI team fell short of the total, scoring 161 (all out) thanks to great bowling from Sussex's James Thorpe (3 for 14) and Matt Geffen (3 for 33).
The CI team face another tough test today as they take on Hampshire at College Field.
Results: Ireland, 154 for 6 from 38.3 overs, (Andy Baleirnie 69 and Lee Nelson 35) beat Hampshire (150 all out) by four wickets. Edward Richardson 4 for 36.
Previous champions Yorkshire, 192 all out, (Gareth Phillips 47) beat last year's winners Middlesex (139 for 9) by 53 runs. Gurman Randhawa 4 for 24.
Wales, 228 for 6, (David Lloyd 126) beat Berkshire (179 all out) by 49 runs. Ewan Brock 38; Aneurin Norman 2 for 18; Ryan Holtby 2 for 27.
