Jersey pair guide CI to rare festival victory

Andy Bradshaw, Jersey Evening Post

AN opening stand of 60 from Jersey lads Ben De Figueiredo and Sam de la Haye helped the Channel Islands under-17s to a rare victory yesterday.
But it was thoroughly deserved seven-wicket success against Hampshire at the College Field in the Standard Bank U16 County Festival.

CI coach Peter Gough, an Island player, said: 'The standard of the visiting counties is always very testing for our players; yes it was a great win yesterday and thoroughly deserved by a team who played at the top of their form.

'Ben and Sam and Jonny Clarke were outstanding with the bat and they were given the chance of a rare win following brilliant bowling and fielding from their colleagues.

'Chris Whitworth and Ben took great catches too and we were able to slow their run-rate down with some fine left-arm spin bowling from Jonny.

'He went on to take five wickets and a haul like that from a Channel Islander in this competition is also very rare.

'At the break I reminded the lads that it was important to build partnerships batting and we did that - everyone batted responsibly and that effort got us home in the end.'

De Figueiredo, who carried his bat, hit four boundaries in scoring an undefeated 57. He was at the crease 178 minutes where he faced 178 balls.

Jersey, who finished bottom of their group behind Hampshire with an inferior run-rate, are playing in a plate semi-final today on pitch two at Les Quennevais.

In yesterday's other matches Sussex beat Ireland by 42 runs, Yorkshire defeated Berkshire by nine wickets and Middlesex beat Wales by 17 runs.

Today's Standard Bank Trophy semi-finals are Ireland and Wales at FB Fields and Sussex and Yorkshire at the College Field. The other Plate semi is Hampshire and Middlesex on pitch one at Les Quennevais.
