Cobo shocked by Mavericks in CI Semi-Final
David Piesing
Guernsey champions Total Cobo, with a 100% winning record this season, are out of the 2007 NatWest CI Club Championshp after suffering a shock 2-wicket defeat against Mavericks. Despite having nearly 9 overs to spare, the margin of victory was extremely tight as the Mavericks' hero on the day, Australian Justin Meades, was dropped with 2 runs still needed.
Mavericks were only chasing 157 in 45 overs, having bowled out Cobo, and as is Mavericks' style they attacked their target aggressively. Run-rate was never going to be an issue - the sole doubt was whether they would get bowled out short of their target.
Batting first, Cobo lost two early wickets and it was left to Jamie Nussbaumer (48) to rebuild the innings but they continued to lose wickets and only an 8th wicket partnership between Blane Queripel and Peter Le Hegarat got them up to 157. Lee Gallienne was the pick of the Mavericks bowlers, conceding just 17 off his 9 overs, with GH Smit conceding just 22 runs from his 9 overs and picking up the vital wicket of Gary Rich.
Mavericks lost early wickets in reply, and only Meades (73 not out), Smit (32) and Jaco Pieterse (16) made double figures as Mavericks made it over the line with just 2 wickets in hand, albeit with nearly 9 overs to spare.
In the other semi-final, Jersey's in-form side, Old Victorians, restricted Guernsey's Marlborough Trust Optimists to just 154 for 9 and reached their target in the 41st over to win by 3 wickets after at one stage being 52 for 4 after Steve Queripel took 4 for 32. Ward Jenner (48) then saw his side over the line.
In this year's Sid Guy Trophy (played between the 5th-placed sides in each island's league who failed to qualify for the CI Championship), Guernsey's PKF Wanderers beat Jersey's Springfield by 55 runs at FB Fields. Having been inserted, Wanderers recovered from 10 for 2 to reach 242 for 7 in their allotted 45 overs, skipper Richard Veillard making 96 and Ben Driver scoring 85 in a fine partnership. Phil Evans took 3 for 36 for the home side while Scott Roberts took 3 for 42. In reply, Springfield were all out for 187 with only openers Mark Saralis (87) and Suthan (41) making any impact but after they were parted Wanderers kept taking wickets at regular intervals, with Phil Challenger took 3 for 40.
