Mavericks hammered by Old Victorians in CI Club Championship Final

David Piesing

Guernsey's Mavericks, who finished 4th in the Guernsey domestic Championship but who performed wonders in beating both the Jersey and Guernsey champions to reach the final, came badly unstuck in the final of this year's NatWest CI Club Championship in losing to Jersey's Old Victorians at Grainville.

After winning the toss, Mavericks's successful game-plan came to an end after the first delivery when OV's opener, Jonny Gough was dropped at slip by skipper Justin Meades off the bowling of Lee Gallienne. The missed chance proved fatal as Gough went on to score an unbeaten 153. Together with skipper, Chris Jones, who also made a fine century, the pair took Mavericks' bowling attack to put on 200 in the last 18 overs which enabled OVs to amass a formidable 295 for 2 in their 45 overs.

In reply Mavericks lost three early wickets and were never then in with a shout. GH Smit top-scored with a half-century but they could only reach 162 all out as OVs made light of their missing bowlers.

It was tough on Mavericks to suffer such an anti-climax after their excellent work in the group stage and semi-final, but they should take great pride from having reached the final which as a big achievement in itself for a club which has only been existence for 4 years.
