GCC retain Murto Cup

GCCbwin retain Murto Cup in one-sided contest.

GCCbwin held on to the coveted Murto Cup as they overwhelmed a Calpe CC side now missing some of their star players back at Universities and Colleges. Star of the GCCbwin performance was newcomer Balangi Avinash, playing his first game on the Rock, who scored an undefeated 86 and then disposed of Calpe CC’s top two batsmen, Mark Bacarese and Iain Latin, to ensure an easy passage for his side.

GCCbwin pile on the runs.

GCCbwin won the toss, opted to bat first, Ian Farrell and Adrian Hewitt putting on 56 runs for the first wicket before the latter was caught at deep mid-off by Scott Chipolina off the bowling of Latin for 20. Farrell seemed headed for his half century when he had his stumps shattered by Chipolina when nine runs short of that target. Kieron Ferrary then gave Chipolina his second wicket of the afternoon as he drove the bowler straight back to him and was duly caught, and at 104/3 and nearly 19 of the allotted overs gone, Calpe appeared to be holding their own. The situation changed dramatically after that as Avinash and Steven Gonzalez upped the tempo in a fourth wicket stand of 61. When Robbie Skinner accounted for Gonzalez (36), Avinash continued his assault on the bowling as the total raced past the 250 mark in next to no time. At the end of the allotted forty overs, it stood on 272/7 with Avinash undefeated on 86. Chipolina was the most successful of the Calpe CC bowlers with figures of 4/59, whilst Skinner took 2/59.

Calpe CC batting collapse.

Given their depleted numbers, much of Calpe CC’s hopes were pinned on Bacarese, Latin and Chipolina, but Avinash had not yet completed his afternoon’s work and when he bowled both Bacarese and Latin, the game was as good as over as a contest, and at one point it seemed as if Calpe would fall far short of three figures. However, an impressive 32 from young Guy Dumas and an undefeated 19 from Karan Sadhwani enabled them to crawl up to 124 before being all dismissed. Avinash finished with figures of 2/7 and Charlie Harrison took 2/21, but the most impressive bowling performance came from Sebastian Suarez who claimed four victims at a personal cost of six runs in just five overs. And so GCCbwin won the Murto Cup for the second year running and gained some modicum of revenge for having been pipped at the post in the Senior League title by Calpe CC.
