GCA GET THEIR MAN.
After a year searching for a replacement to David Young, the Gibraltar Cricket Association finally found the man they were looking for in Richard Askew. Richard was over in Gibraltar last week-end meeting members of the GCA Executive Committee and has now accepted the post of Development Manager. He should be in post within the next four weeks. This is an important step for the GCA who have felt the lack of cricket coaching in the schools since David Young left in September 2006 to take up a post with the English and Welsh Cricket Board.
Richard Agnew is a Level 3 ECB Coach and an experienced ECB Tutor and coach who has of late been working as part of the Performance Department at Somerset County Cricket Club. He is used to creating and administering individually tailored programmes for district, county youth and Academy/Second team players. He has been a lead tutor and coordinator of county Coach Education programmes and is experienced in multi-skilled teams and working on his own initiative. He is a proven communicator at all levels and very competent in dealing with technology and support systems.
Richard joined Somerset County Cricket Club in September 2005, having previously been a self-employed coach since leaving the Royal Navy in 2002. His current post at the County is that of Youth Performance Manager. In this respect his responsibilities have included planning and delivering of both one to one coaching within the Performance Department, the administration of the Somerset ECB Academy scheme, planning, delivering and administering of the county Coach Education programme and coordinating the district and county youth programme. In addition, he has been the lead coach of the Taunton based sixth-form academy scheme, the women’s first team coach, developing women’s and girls’ teams, coaches and managers at representative levels. [Local girls take note!)
He was previously a freelance cricket coach within county and district programmes for both Somerset and Dorset, spent several seasons as coach to Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Combined Services teams and Premier League clubs.
Richard’s remit with the GCA will be manifold. Basic to the nature of the post will be to re-introduce cricket into all the local schools, and continue the work done by David Gelling, Philip Hudson and David Young. In addition he will be expected to coach the GCA’s national squads from under thirteen to full National side levels. On the administrative side, one of his first tasks will be to draw up a new Development Plan outlining the Association’s aims in the coming years.
All in all, then, an exciting moment for local cricket enthusiasts.
