JUNIORS BENEFIT FROM ECC CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Jay Singh

There were 23 other players from 12 countries selected to take part in this week. The program was run by a high profile group of 5 coaches, which included the Scotland captain at the recent World Cup, Craig Wright. Philip Hudson was the overall coordinator.

There was an intense daily program for the participants from 8.45am. to 7pm or at times even 8pm with just a short lunch break. Starting from various interesting warm up drills, which also included different coaching aids and imaginative games, the entire time was spent on cricket techniques. All the participants were led through a series of sessions which covered batting, bowling and fielding. The distribution of the players into 5 groups was very effective, each group being supervised by a senior coach, and the country leaders were also allocated to the players from their own countries.

The evenings were spent indoors where there were discussions together with videos of matches, and match tactics were discussed. The aim was to train the students physically as well as mentally to have the right approach to cricket. The discussions were lively and produced energetic responses from the students.

The last day culminated in a match played among the 25 students who were divided into 2 teams. Swiss representatives John Gallon and Richard Marsden acquitted themselves very well not only during the week’s course of training sessions but also by performing so well on the last day in the match.

The administrative arrangements were excellent thanks to Philip Hudson and the stay in the fabulous La Manga Retreat was a memorable one. I am sure that all participants benefited greatly from this once in a lifetime experience.
