Norwegian umpires attend an Introductory Umpiring Course in Oslo

Keith Healey

ICC Umpire Instructor Keith Healey

ICC European Umpire Tutor, Keith Healey, visited Oslo during the weekend of 7 - 9th March 2008, in order to run the ICC European Introductory Umpiring Course/Exam.

A group of umpires underwent this intensive weekend of training and gained considerable knowledge from Keith, not only from his tutoring skills but also from his experience as an umpire in England.

The class consisted of 10 inexperienced umpires who were attending in order to take the Exam and these were supplemented by several experienced umpires who used the sessions as a refresher.

This resulted in a good balance between new blood and experience.

One session of instruction took place on the evening of Friday 7th March.  Saturday was taken up with a session from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.  There was more tuition on Sunday, from 9-30 a.m. until 1-00 p.m.  A revision session followed lunch, with Keith showing the group a mock examination to give them practice in the style of question they could expect in the ICC European Introductory Umpiring visual examination.

The visual examination took place at 2 p.m. and there followed a brief oral examination of each candidate individually.

All ten candidates passed the examination, with marks comfortably in excess of the pass mark. The new umpires are now hoping to have the opportunity to expand the range of topics studied, possibly later this year.
