Ollie Webster in fine form as Island Select XI win Standard Bank Manx Challenge
M Trace
An electric 51 from Ollie Webster powered the Island Select to victory in the annual Standard Bank Manx Challenge.
Castletown, the 2007 champions, ran up a creditable 161 with Christian Steriopulos cracking 42 not out and Wicus Wessels in fine form making 41. Pick of the Island bowlers was Arne van der Berg who took 1 for 11 off eight very tight overs.
Nick Hawke had 2 for 36 and a splendid spell from Alex Stokoe saw the young Cronkbourne player finish with 3 for 19.
Needing to score at over four an over, the Select stormed away with a great opening stand. Webster dominated play with some fine strokes. He hit 6 fours and one six before being dismissed.
Peter Lewis batted sensibly for a classy 36 and it was left to the St Johns pair of Jon Norrington and Greg Hawke to guide the side home with overs to spare.
At the end Greg was undefeated on 20 and Jon made 11 not out. The team won by six wickets with John Short returning 2 for 17 and Garreth Roome and Andy Sewell claiming the other wickets.
