Championship Wins for Argylls and Cobo
David Piesing
Argyll Investments (formerly Mavericks) got their season off to a great start with a 4-wicket victory over Marlborough Trust Optimists at KGV. While Optimists only managed to muster 9 men, which was extremely disappointing for such a well-established club, Argylls still had to do the business but with 7 youngsters in their emerging young side they chased down their target after bowling out Optimists for 165.
Former island skipper Andy Biggins made 61 for Optimists but they collapsed dramatically after his dismissal from 120 for 2 to 165 all out. Young legspinner Alex Fisher took 3 for 20 while there were two wickets apiece from seamers Adam Martel and Chris Dravers. In reply, 17-year old opener David Hooper (48) shared an opening partnership of 95 with Simon Huxtable (41) and despite a mid-innings wobble Argylls were seen over the line by Tom Kimber (28 not out) to clinch a morale-boosting victory for his side.
Meanwhile at College Field champions Total Cobo saw off the threat of Elizabeth College to win by 97 runs. The Cobo innings saw a return to form for island all-rounder Jeremy Frith who made 103 not out from 124 balls, with skipper Stuart Le Prevost (44) and Kris Moherdl (45 not out from 38 balls) being the other main contributors. In reply the College struggled from the word go and when Tim Ravenscroft was bowled by a beauty from Jamie Nussbaumer their target became even more daunting. The College were all out for 139 with Frith ending with 3 for 18 while young Dane Mullen took 2 for 6.
In Division 2, PKF Wanderers 2 hammered Sylvans by 163 runs at Port Soif. Wanderers made 259 for 6 (Mark Stenner making 60) and bowled out Sylvans for 96 with young John Purdy picking up 3 wickets.
