Gingins Junior Cricket Club launched in March 2008

Gingins is a small village in the Lac Leman Region, some 20 minutes from Geneva and about 10 minutes from Nyon. Better known for its football team, the village is now host to the Gingins Cricket Club (GCC) after a group of dads started the club in March this year. The impetus for the club came from many sessions of backyard cricket and the realization that there were a lot of kids around the area interested in playing cricket and a lot of families from Commonwealth countries interested in seeing their kids play a sport that they grew up with.
The Gingins Commune very kindly agreed to allow the club to use the local outdoor handball court which has a great surface and means that the club can play in most weather. Since the inaugural session on March 31st the club has met every week. They have high hopes that in time and with growing interest the club might be able to work with the Commune to develop a proper cricket ground.
Initial interest has been overwhelming and with over 40 youngsters signed up the Sunday sessions are full. The sessions concentrate on training basic skills and playing Kwik cricket with the youngest players (5 & 6 year olds), while more advanced techniques are taught to the older group of Under 11s. The Swiss Cricket Association has been able to provide some financial help towards purchasing equipment while the neighbouring Geneva Region Youth Cricket Club has also been assisting the new club.
On May 24th Gingins Under 11s team played their first ever match. It was a great event hosted very kindly by GRYCC and the match ended in an exciting tie 47 runs apiece!
Now into June the club continues to develop and another U11 game has been lined up with other local neighbours, the Cossonay Cricket Club on July 5th. In addition, the club is forming a Senior team. A game has been lined up with Cossonay on September 14th.
Gingins is very pleased to have joined the ranks of budding junior teams in Switzerland and hopes that next year they will also be playing in the Swiss Under 11 league. As one father said, It is great to see the kids really developing a love of the game, which was the whole purpose of setting up the club.
