Brace of centuries for Friend

M Trace

Travis Friend smashed his second century in two days as Castletown beat Valkyres in the second round of the Tinker Cup.

Over 530 runs were scored in 76 overs on a superb batting track at King William’s College. Going in first, the Town made 353 for the loss of only two wickets. A fine opening stand between Gareth Morris and Mark Williams ended when Morris was caught off the bowling of Abdul Khan for 83. His whirlwind innings included twelve fours.

Friend came in at number three and quickly set about the bowling. With punishing stroke-play, he crashed 117 runs from only 59 balls with no less than twenty fours!

Williams also struck a century and was still there at the end with 128 not out. He had batted 167 minutes and faced 119 balls. A splendid effort which he then built on with a fine wicket keeping display.

Valkyres lost an early wicket before Shahzaib Rajs and Dave Hopkins steadied the side. When they were out, it was left to skipper Ali Shah to carry on the run chase. He made 57 in 110 minutes before falling to Greg Tomlinson.

The side were dismissed for a lively 157 from 36 overs. Andy Sewell, Tom Holdbrook and Tomlinson each took two wickets.

Meanwhile at Tromode Cronkbourne and Ramsey fought a cliff-hanger tie. Opener Max Stokoe led the Douglas side with 31 before he was caught and bowled by Jamie Moffatt. The northern grip tightened when Brian Arnold put down a great spell. In the course of his eight overs, he took 2 for 10. Adam Peel also took two wickets and Moffatt ended with a creditable 3 -28.

Chasing a target of only 126 for victory, Ramsey were rocked by the Stokoe brothers. Max took four wickets and Alex three as the cup holders slumped into deep trouble. Skipper Rob Webber and Ashley Webster then rallied the side with a good stand.

However, when Webster was bowled by Phil Richardson for 27, more wickets fell. The side started the final over with the last pair at the wicket, but only a few runs needed. In a tense finish, Webber guided his side into the next round, finishing on 25 not out. A close call for the northerners, but they enter the draw for the semi finals with Castletown, St John’s and the winners of this Sunday’s tie between Crosby and Union Mills.
