Annual MCC fixture

M Trace

The Island just lost to the MCC in a thrilling finish at Tromode on Friday. In a match, which was almost ruined by rain, the visitors were dismissed for 190.

There were numerous stoppages due to the weather as the tourists reached 121 for 4. Former Cronkbourne opener Pete Richards, who now plays for Twickenham, made a solid 30 and Jon Smailes hit a good 39. When he departed, there was a clatter of wickets as the Manx got on top. At 134 for 7 the Island were in a good position, but a robust 21 by Gareth Williams enabled the MCC to reach 190.

Ollie Webster was the top bowler with 3 for 41, while Nick Hawke took 2 for 18. There were also wickets for Greg Hawke, Garreth Roome and Danny Hawke.

In reply the Island lost a quick wicket, but Chris Hawke and Max Stokoe then took control. At 50 for 1 all seemed well, but Hawke then fell to Smailes for 21 and the game swung. Webster clattered a lively 22, but at 121 for 7 the match seemed lost.

However, Nick Hawke and Greg Hawke had other ideas and, with the overs running out, edged the Manx towards their target. They had reached 164 for 7 when Nick fell to Gareth Williams for 33. Greg followed soon afterwards for 28.

At the start of the last over, the Island were seven behind and the last pair were at the crease. In a tense climax, there was a dramatic run-out and the MCC had won by a narrow margin.

David Quayle and David Kenworthy did admirable work as the umpires. Thanks are also due to Isle of Man Bank for their sponsorship, Cronkbourne who provided a very good track and the Works Division of the Board of Education for a splendid outfield.
