Cronkbourne go joint top

M Trace

Cronkbourne are now joint top of The Standard Bank Premiership after a convincing win over Loaghtyn. The Tromode side made 199 for 6 and then bowled out the Rams for 52. For Cronkbourne Alex Stokoe hit 88 while Sam Walker took 4 for 15 and Neil Holmes 3 for 11.

Meanwhile St John’s are back in the fight. On Saturday they beat leaders Ramsey by eight wickets and are now just four points off the top.

The northerners were dismissed for 217 with Adam Peel hitting 57 and Ashley Webster 56. Greg Hawke took 3 for 46 and there were two wickets each for Arne van der Berg, Russell Miller and Paul Atherton.

In a determined display, St John’s then knocked off the runs for the loss of only two wickets. Phil Littlejohns made 73, Chris Hawke 64 and skipper Jon Norrington a resolute 52 not out.

There was a major shock at Marown where bottom placed Crosby beat Castletown. Simon Watson scored an immaculate 124 not out and Kevin Kniveton cracked 63 as Crosby finished on 257 for 2. Christian Steriopulos led the Town reply with an excellent 90, but his side fell 37 runs short. Dave Picken took 4 for 30 and Jack Rowlands had 2 for 19.

Crosby stormed into the semi-finals of the Standard Bank Tinker Cup with a great win over Union Mills on Sunday.

Marown skipper Dave Picken stunned the Millers with an opening spell of three wickets for four runs. A valiant innings of 26 by Jodie James held his side together, but two more wickets from Asanka De Silva sealed their fate.

Union Mills were dismissed for 80 and then had to face Simon Watson. He had scored 124 the previous day and carried on in the same attacking style. Aided by Jack Rowlands and Tudor Baker, Watson took Crosby to victory in just ten overs. At the end he was unbeaten on 48, while the one wicket to fall was taken by Ian Shanahan.

In the semi-finals Crosby now travel north to meet cup holders Ramsey. In the other tie St John’s are at home to Castletown. The games will be played on Sunday, July 5.

The draw for the semi-finals of the Blincoe Cup threw up an intriguing Southern derby between Castletown B and Valkyres. Also Peel will be at home against the winners of the Cronkbourne v Ronaldsway tie. The Blincoe semis are down for Sunday, July 19.
