Bulgaria - European Spirit of Cricket Weekend
22 May 2002

Bulgaria discovered a whole cricketing community which they were previously unaware of, when they held their event - a 20-over round-robin tournament between the local Indian, Pakistani and English expat communities - at the National Sports Academy in Sofia. The English team included a number of the Bulgarian students from the Academy who had previously been involved in a coaching weekend, in order to give them further exposure to the game.

The tournament was played on a football field, with a pitch of hard rubber matting which Nikolai Kolev had specially acquired for the purpose - and it played pretty well. Well enough for the Indian medical students to demonstrate formidable batting style and to run out winners in both their games. As the Academy is in a residential area, and tends to be used for general recreation at weekends, quite a few people crowded around the boundary to watch this strange game, and there were also representatives from national newspapers and television.

It was great to discover that there are other people playing cricket in Bulgaria and plans are being made to meet again. Nikolai Kolev also plans to introduce cricket into the curriculum at the Academy for the next academic year, so hopefully by next summer there will be a local side to take part!
