Defeats for Ireland and Scotland in C&G Trophy
31 May 2002
Scotland and Ireland both struggled in their C&G Trophy matches against English county sides. Ireland went down to Nottinghamshire by eight wickets at Clontarf. Greg Smith and Andrew Harris helped reduce the hosts to 48/5, but Kyle McCallan (30 not out) and Derek Heasley (26) helped lift the total to 164 off 50 overs. The professionals made light of it, however, with an unbeaten 64 from Usman Afzaal seeing them to an eight-wicket win with 12 overs to spare. Scotland fared no better in their rain-delayed match against Surrey at Grange. A century from Mark Ramprakash helped propel Surrey to 246 for two off their 50 overs, and with a further rain intervention, Scotland's 63/4 off 24.1 overs was nowhere near enough, giving Surrey victory by 55 runs.
