Terry Jenner in Ireland
7 August 2002
Australian leg-spin coach Terry Jenner visited Ireland in July, first spending a couple of days working with the Leinster Cricket Union. Many of those at the Clontarf CC session were recently qualified Level 1 coaches, and several players, including Andrew Leonard, Thomas Garry and South African provincial player Warrick Hinkle, also attended. Terry, who has worked very closely with Shane Warne over the years and now works as a consultant with the ECB in their quest to produce a quality wrist spin bowler for their Test team, then travelled up to the European Championships in Belfast, where he was due to run a session at lunch during the Ireland v Scotland game at Lisburn. The match was rained off, but not to be denied, the participants moved indoors to the Cricket Centre of Excellence at Queen's University, PE Centre. Terry worked with the best young spinners (wrist and finger) in the province. The intensive session left the participants with a lot of thoughts on how they need to work hard to achieve the standards required. Everyone left with a much greater appreciation of the art of spinning and benefited immensely from the experience. It was much appreciated that Derek Underwood also dropped into the session and offered a few words of advice to the young bowlers. Terry also took the opportunity to observe matches and practice sessions at the European Championships and to pass on the benefit of his experience to the national coaches.
