Batting for Peace in Kosovo
ECC Media Release - 28 August 2002
Kosovo. Not renowned for the cathartic sound of leather on willow. If minefields are mentioned, it's a reference to the real thing rather than a lively wicket. In short, the country has had more pressing issues to tackle than explosive batting and strike bowling. Cricket is coming to Kosovo, however, as the ICC European Development Programme will be arriving in Pristina to run a project involving EDP coaches, keen cricketers among the KFOR troops stationed in the city, and local youngsters from the Albanian Serbian and Roma communities, over the weekend of 30 August - 1 September. European Development Programme coach, Tim Dellor, will get the project under way on the Friday evening, with a coach education session for cricketers from the 1st Battalion Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (current Army and Infantry cricket champions), NGO personnel and local youth group leaders. On the Saturday and Sunday, the 1 PWRR will play limited overs matches against cricketers from the Indian Special Police Unit, and their newly trained coaches will assist Tim in running coaching sessions for up to 200 local youngsters, including around 40 disabled children who will be brought along by the Vietnam Veterans of America as part of their Sports for Life programme. A Flicx pitch and Kwik Cricket sets, funded jointly by the ICC European Development Programme and by countries who raised funds during events run on European Spirit of Cricket Weekend (4-5 May), will be flown in for use over the weekend, and then left in the country so that the new coaches can continue working with the children with a view to running a tournament later in the year.
