Irish Women take on Men
26 April 2002
The Irish Women's squad recently kicked off their season with their debut matches in the Leinster Men's league (Intermediate A). They played against Clontarf IV XI on 27 April at Castle Avenue and against YMCA IV on 28 April at Claremont Road. The Women will play each team in the league once only and each match will be in the opposition's home ground. As the Irish Women's squad are still without a coach since Richard Davies' resignation, Adi Birrell (the recently installed National Coach) will be taking them through their paces this Thursday in a team practice to be held in Malahide CC before they make their league debut. It is a ground breaking move to have a women's team competing in the Leinster Men's league and it is seen as a progression from the recent stance which saw clubs being allowed to pick members of the Women's National Squad on their own men's teams. It is hoped that the inclusion of the National Women's team in the men's league will greatly improve their 50-over game at international level, by giving them more match practice and more experience at a different level.
