Switzerland - European Spirit of Cricket Weekend
8 May 2002

May 4th, the demonstration match (Cossonay CC versus CERN CC) at Cossonay was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to continuous rain. We adjourned to Cossonay Town Hall where the Swiss Federation of Umpires and Scorers (sFOCUS) presented an exposition of the new laws of cricket using models, real equipment and computer imagery. Three of their officers were on hand to do this and we also had input from EDP coach Ralph Dellor. Eleven SCA players were present and the 'Spirit of Cricket' cards were distributed. In the evening there was a dinner given by the Cossonay Club during which Ralph Dellor gave a radio interview, via telephone, to BBC Radio 5.

May 5th, the rain continued and by now the weather was also quite cold. Nevertheless, seven brave juniors (ages 13 to 15) - some of them playing for the first time -- plus their parents, turned up at the ground for the event. Again we adjourned to the Town Hall where the video tape 'This is Cricket' was shown accompanied by simultaneous translation into French and real live demonstrations by Mr. Dellor. Amazingly the weather cleared so we suspended the video show and took to a local school yard (the ground was too sodden to use) where batting, catching, fielding and bowling techniques were practiced using Kwik Cricket sets. Then a pairs tournament was held with individual scores being recorded in order to decide who got the special prizes. Six Cossonay players and Ralph Dellor all took part in the above.

Then it was back to the Town Hall where the Video show was resumed and, as a bonus, a recording of Ralph's interview was played. All the participants received a 'Spirit' tee-shirt and signed certificate and the best girl was awarded an ICC pen and pencil set, the best boy receiving a Swiss National Team shirt (as worn in Austria last summer). Various other articles of cricketing paraphernalia were handed out (calendars, posters).

On both the 4th and the 5th a collection was taken for the Kosovo kids.

Overall, as a result of the weather not as many participants turned out as the SCA hoped, but with those that did the outcome was positive. Again the game reached a new audience and a report has gone into the local press, following earlier articles announcing the weekend and its objectives.
