Denmark win 2003 ECC Indoor Championships
19 February 2003
The 2003 European Indoor Championships ended with a popular home victory for Denmark in the Danish Cricket Association's 50th anniversary year. The Danes, who looked a force to be reckoned with throughout, winning all their matches in both the group and knockout stages of the tournament, beat Portugal, playing in their fourth indoor final, by three wickets. Spain, one of the surprise packages of the tournament, defeated France to win the plate competition, having already beaten the much-fancied Irish squad in the semi-finals. The tournament saw a number of firsts, with all squads decked out in coloured clothing with numbers on the back (no doubt assisting the scorers no end) and music played between innings and matches. The standard of cricket on offer was better than ever, and the tournament, as usual, threw up its fair share of surprise results. Our congratulations go to all of the twelve participating squads whose enthusiasm, commitment and sportsmanship always make the event such a joy to watch, to the officials who gave their time to umpire and score, and to our Danish hosts, who not only won the tournament, but organised a truly magnificent and memorable event.
