Denmark - Esbjerg Take Cup
6 July 2001
The final of the Knockout Cup between Esbjerg and Svanholm proved to be an exciting match played in cool and cloudy conditions after a week of continuous rain that allowed no outdoor training to take place. Svanholm batted first but failed to gain any momentum in their innings, with the only partnership of any note being between the Vestergaard brothers. A disastrous final 10 overs saw the side lose 7/37 to be bowled out in the 39th over for 156. Esbjerg's reply was cautious, losing only three wickets, but only scoring the winning runs off the 3rd last ball. Opening batsman, S¯ren Hansen made a steady 65 not out, and was presented with the man of the match award by Peter Kirsten. Herning on Top Halfway through Season Cricket has come to a standstill in Denmark, following the departure of the national squad for Canada, with the first half of the season completed. Undefeated Herning top the table after beaten Svanholm last Sunday. Both teams had, until then, won all their matches in the Premier League. Svanholm batted first but the top order failed to make an impact on the bowling, thus putting the middle order under pressure, and although some hitting was done, there was no innings of any consequence, and they were bowled out for 179 in the last over. Herning, despite losing some late wickets, reached the score in the 49th over. Kent Jensen, Herning's solid middle order batsman, hit 3 towering sixes that went well out of the ground, and kick started Herning's innings after they had made a slow and cautious start. Earlier in the season he made a century off 40 balls, and clearly has the ability to change the flow of a game quickly. Other news from Denmark is the recent visit by South African club side, St.Augustine, from Capetown in Western Province, which boasts Test leg spinner Paul Adams, who played against a couple of club sides and the National Team as part of their preparation for the ICC Trophy.
