Strong youth representation on new GCA committee
1 May 2003
The Gibraltar Cricket Association held its AGM on 28 April, with Tom Finlayson MBE voted Chairman, Ian Wood Vice Chairman (Ian will also be Gibraltar's Associate member representative on the ECC Executive Committee following the ECC AGM in June), Adrian Hewitt Hon. Secretary and Terence Garcia Hon. Treasurer. After a close vote between five nominees for the remaining three places on the executive committee, Steven Gonzalez, Michael Escott and Steve Carey were duly elected. The GCA are pleased that two of the appointees, Terence and Steven will be able to put forward the thoughts of our junior and youth members, both being youngsters themselves and having represented Gibraltar on the field in the past. It is also nice to welcome Michael ("Cookie") onto the committee as he, besides having memorably represented Gibraltar on one occasion, is also an excellent Chef! A recurring theme in both the Chairman's and Treasurer's reports was finance, or the lack of it. It was recognised that the GCA and its members must access all sources of income possible and tighten their belts in order to continue to develop. Given the enthusiasm and assistance of the membership it was felt that the Association should be able to achieve the majority of its previously agreed developmental goals despite diminished funding. Following the AGM, the cricket season in Gibraltar got underway in early May. Five clubs have entered the Weekend League and eleven the Midweek League. Favourites for the Weekend League will again be UK Civilians CC. However, Calpe CC, set up a few years ago as a developmental youth team, may run them close this year as their players are all one year older and wiser. A lot may hinge on the availability of the Calpe students studying abroad. In the Midweek League it could be a tight thing this year. Many clubs have recruited promising juniors to add to their squads and with a few "seasoned pros" in their ranks this could make for a very close and exciting contest.
