When a late request for an Introductory Course came from the Hellenic Cricket Federation, the European Development Program responded immediately by sending Denis Burns to Corfu. The visual PowerPoint format developed by Graham Cooper was a greatly appreciated resource. Most of the participants spoke some English but written English can be a problem for course members who use a completely different alphabet. The combination of practical demonstration, visual presentation and expert simultaneous translation by George Poulimenos made for a demanding and enjoyable three days. The course served two purposes: as a refresher for umpires with experience in Greek cricket, and as an introduction for those embarking on an umpiring career.

George assembled a complex timetable which allowed a core of participants to experience the full course whilst, at the same time, allowing a group of active umpires the opportunity to discuss field-craft and Law related questions. The debates were lively and constructive with every participant taking an active part. A video demonstration was also used to great effect, helping to further bridge the language gap.

The break in proceedings for the siesta allowed Denis to design an overs-card, in Greek, using the excellent computing facilities provided by the Hellenic Cricket Federation office. The cards will be used this season to further assist umpires in their duties. The photograph shows the post-course celebration in the bar owned by Ilias Dafnis, captain of the Greek national side.
