Day/Nighter in Germany - Tegernsee's Peter Stiff reports
Peter Stiff - June 18, 2003

Sunday 8 June saw Tegernsee CC take on Munich CC in Germany's first day night game at 'The Point', Tegernsee. Tegernsee CC is a club formed by teacher Wolfgang Albert and based, mainly, on the talents of children from the local grammar school along with a few enthusiastic `ausl”nder'. Tegernsee's ground must rate as one of Europe's most beautiful, situated as it is by lake Tegernsee, 700 metres high in the German Alps. The local brew-house, arguably Bavaria's most famous, also stays blurrily in the memory of most guests.

The game was split into two innings of 20 overs, the first played in daylight and the second in the twilight/night. The first innings saw excellent batting from two of Germany's U15 players, Timmi Eberhard and Max H–ch, along with excellent bowling from fellow U15 player Julian Streibel. At the end of the first innings MCC held a lead of 20 thanks mainly to 49 not out from 'The Doctor'. Although disappointing from a Tegernsee point of view, it was really pleasing that our U15 German players were able to hold their own against adult opposition. All bodes well for the U15-2nd Division Championships in France later this year.

The second innings was played under the threat of a thunderstorm. As the sun went down and the lights took effect, sadly the only Tegernsee fireworks came from lightning striking the nearby Austrian mountains. In the end the result was shrouded in mystery as the scorer decided he couldn't score as he couldn't see the scorebook.

Everybody agreed that the experiment was a success, however, and hopefully we shall hold more day/night games in the future. Next time we will provide the scorer with a miners lamp!
