India take on PakistanÖ in Bulgaria
October 2, 2003
On Sunday 28 September, Bulgarian CC (a club made up of Pakistanis living in Sofia) took on a team of Indian medical students living in the Bulgarian capital in a match organised as a protest against terrorism. Bulgarian CC's Saif Ur-Rehman explained: "We want to tell the world that we want peace, and although Pakistan and India are enemies on the border, the cricket players from both nations are friends on the cricket ground - they shake hands with each other, they support each other in the game, they respect each other on the field. We want to say with this match that cricket teaches lessons about respect, discipline and principles of life. We can find peace on the cricket ground and in all sports." The Bulgarian Cricket Federation and the South African Embassy in Sofia supported the initiative and helped arrange the match, which started at midday in perfect weather. The Indian students won the toss and decided to bat first. Their openers didn't hang about, putting 100 on the board in 9 overs, and, with an impressive century from PS Gill, the students made 241 runs in their 20 overs. The students' bowlers made an equally impressive start, removing one of Bulgarian CC's openers in the first over, and leaving them reeling at 21-4 not long afterwards. Solid innings from Saif Ur-Rehman (64) and Hataish (43) helped their team regain some ground, and for a while a close finish looked possible, but Bulgarian CC were only able to squeeze 193 runs out of their 20 overs, leaving the medical students as winners by 48 runs.
