Ireland Take Women's European Championships
15 August 2001
On Sunday 12 August the EDM attended the final afternoon and prize giving ceremony of the Women's European Championships at Bradfield College. The EDM witnessed a tense tussle between the ever-improving Scots, who narrowly lost to the Dutch in fading light. On the adjacent ground, the Irish team totally outplayed the ECB U19 team, bowling them out for 60 and thereby winning the tournament. The spirit, commitment and skill witnessed were impressive, and the enthusiasm for staging future tournaments, hopefully with additional European teams, was evident. A number of the younger players featuring at this tournament will no doubt be looking forward to the U21 Tournament next year, details of which have yet to be finalised. The prize giving ceremony, attended by a large number of supporters and local media, stage-managed so successfully by Gill McConway (ECB National Manager - Women's Cricket) was a lively affair. The ECB Women's coach, John Harmer, presented the Player of the Tournament award, whilst the EDM carefully handed over the magnificent Waterford Crystal trophy to overjoyed Irish captain, Nikki Squire.
