Promising Signs of Interest from Bulgarian National Sports Academy

Professor Nikolay Kolev from the National Sports Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria, recently contacted the Europe Office, having visited the ECC website and subscribed to the newsletter. He is keen to introduce a new sport to Bulgaria and says that the students are interested in cricket. The Academy "Vassil Levski", which was founded in 1942, is the only higher educational establishment in Bulgaria in the field of physical culture and sports, and employs 20 Doctors of Sciences, 92 PhD, 22 professors, 65 assistant professors, 178 senior assistants. It runs programmes at Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate level and fulfils the role of national centre for research and development in the field of physical culture and sport, enjoying wide international prestige. Besides its academic record, the NSA specialises in training elite sportsmen. Students or graduates of the Academy have won 26 Olympic titles, 89 silver and bronze Olympic medals, 37 world champion titles and 80 silver and bronze medals at world championships, and nineteen NSA sports clubs compete in national and international championships and tournaments.
