Lord's Head Groundsman in Denmark
7 November 2001

Following the loss of the Br¯ndby ground in Denmark and the opening of the new international ground a ten-minute drive away, the experience of MCC's Head Groundsman, Mick Hunt, was called upon to assist the ongoing development of the ground. The EDM and S¯ren Nissen, the long-serving Danish cricket administrator, had discussed the idea of a visit by Mick late in 2000, when construction of the pavilion and ground was in its early stages.

Mick's 36-hour visit took in the new ground and allowed him to meet with the groundstaff and Head of Recreation and Sport from the local council. His enthusiasm was infectious and the two groundstaff have subsequently been given a translated version of Mick's notes to follow throughout the year. There is every chance that the Danish groundstaff may find themselves at Lord's in the future comparing notes and sharing experiences

According to the EDM, "This is an area of support that has been under-used in the past. The European Development Programme is keen to support those member countries who have grass pitches, as there is no doubt that to improve techniques and be well prepared to play against the strongest Associate opposition as well as county teams, good pitches are essential".

The MCC are to be applauded for their contribution to this scheme, and requests for similar visits through the EDP are welcomed as part of the strategy to support this important area of development.
