Holland win the European Indoor Championship
Holland beat Greece by three runs in a gripping final for this year's ECC Indoor Championships. The Tournament, held in the Spanish town of Javea on 12th and 13th February, was deemed "the best ever" by MCC Secretary Roger Knight who presented the Indoor Trophy to the Dutch. Holland's man of the Match, Van der Hide, secured victory by helping his side to a total of 106, before bowling out Greece for 103. Portugal, winners of the trophy for the past two years, were defeated in the semi-finals by the eventual winners, while strongly-fancied Denmark were also denied a place in the final thanks to a characteristically breathtaking fielding display by the Greeks. Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria and Germany were all knocked out after the group stage, as were hosts Spain whose inexperienced side produced one of the upsets of the weekend with victory over Denmark. Ex-test umpire Don Oslear, serving as Tournament Referee, nominated Greek Captain, Jurgoa Stogianos as Player of the Tournament. The weekend demonstrated the massive progress of some of cricket's lesser-known nations in Europe. The standard and interest in this year's competition was unprecedented, no doubt aided by the presence of young sides from ICC Associate Members, Holland and Denmark, appearing at this event for the first time. … Full results
Cricket presentations to Austrian teachers
Ralph Dellor visited Austrai from 26-28 February to make presentations to some 70 schoolteachers at the Padagogischen Institut des Bundes (PIB) in Vienna in the hope that they will introduce cricket into their school curriculum. Some were language teachers who can see the use of cricket to teach English, while the majority were involved in physical education, interested in the game for its own sake. The teachers took part in games of continuous cricket, pairs cricket and went through a number of practice routines. As a result of these presentations it is hoped to establish inter-school fixtures during the summer and the PIB is keen for further presentations to primary school teachers.
