France Cricket
Who we are?
The first attempt to bring some semblance of order to the various cricket clubs operating in France was the creation, in 1920, of the Federation Francaise de Cricket. Member clubs were mainly centred in and around Paris, although grounds had earlier been established in the south east and north east of the country.
The FFC subsequently languished but in 1986 was re-formed as the Association Francaise de Cricket and in 1987 admitted as an Affiliate Member of the ICC, although lacking the membership to justify recognition as a sports federation by the French Government. In order to gain access to government funding the AFC was incorporated into the Federation Francaise de Baseball & Softball in 1990 and the title of the FFBS was changed to include 'Cricket'. The re-named FFBSC assumed Affiliate Membership of the ICC.
By 1997 it had become apparent that France was unlikely to progress beyond Affiliate Membership as the cricket sub-committee of the FFBSC. Further, although cricket was by now played throughout France, few clubs outside the Ile de France and the north showed any interest in the FFBSC or the activities of its cricket sub-committee. Thus the decision was made to form a new and independent association, with the primary twin objectives of revitalising cricket on a national basis and of seeking Associate Membership of the ICC.
In October 1997 FRANCE CRICKET was formed and its constitution approved at its Inaugural General Meeting at Chateau des Ormes, it's first headquarters. Following a well organised campaign and the customary ICC inspection France was admitted as an Associate Member of the ICC in June 1998, at which time the FFBSC resigned as an ICC Affiliate.
However, the FFBSC remained the body recognised by the French Government as the authority for cricket, and to maintain credibility both with the ICC and in France, it was necessary for FRANCE CRICKET to confirm its affiliation to the FFBSC, to subsequently modify its constitution in 1999 to bring it more in line with that of the FFBSC and to transfer its headquarters there.
With a recognition by the current administration of the FFBSC that the needs of its three component sports were not identical, the constitution of the FFBSC was changed in December 2004 to give greater autonomy to FRANCE CRICKET, a fact emphasised by the federation reverting to its original title, FFBS. Notwithstanding its newly acquired autonomy FRANCE CRICKET retains its headquarters at the FFBS, with which it enjoys cordial relations.
All members of the FRANCE CRICKET Management Committee are directly elected by majority club vote to serve for four years. They all serve entirely voluntarily.
